Read everything you need to know about the treatment here:
#1 In Brief
At Cosmo Laser, we treat increased sweating with Botulinum A toxin, which blocks the neurotransmitter from nerve endings, inhibiting the transmission of nerve impulses to the sweat glands. Normally, the nervous system activates sweat glands when the body becomes warm or experiences emotional stress. By blocking the neurotransmitter, this can reduce the amount of sweat produced.
Increased sweating is known as hyperhidrosis, which is the overproduction of sweat in amounts exceeding what is physiologically necessary for regulating body temperature. In Denmark, 3-4% of the population has hyperhidrosis to varying degrees. Hyperhidrosis is often a taboo topic, which is why the actual prevalence in the population is likely higher than reported. Treatment with botulinum toxin can reduce sweating and significantly improve quality of life.
#2 Before Treatment
To diagnose hyperhidrosis, the specialist will assess your description of symptoms and prior attempted treatments during your consultation, and may conduct a gravimetric test. The test involves placing filter paper in your armpits to collect sweat, which is then weighed to confirm hyperhidrosis.
Avoid taking blood-thinning medications such as fish oil, Treo, Ipren, Kodimagnyl, and similar medicines for four days before treatment, as this increases the risk of bruising and bleeding in the treatment area.
The treatment area should be intact, without infections, wounds, or irritation. It is also recommended to ensure that the skin is well-maintained before starting treatment. Well-maintained skin responds better to treatment and can also recover more quickly.
Failure to adhere to the above precautions may result in treatment cancellation or postponement. We reserve the right to charge a fee of DKK 500 if you are sent home, and the appointment is canceled later than 24 hours before the treatment. This also applies to no-shows or cancellations made later than 24 hours before the treatment.
According to cosmetic treatment regulations, the treated area must be photographed before the treatment can begin. If the treatment is performed for medical reasons with a positive gravimetric test, the area will not be photographed before treatment.
#3 During Treatment
The gravimetric test will be reviewed, and then the skin will be cleaned and disinfected.
The treatment involves injecting small amounts of Botulinum toxin into the armpits. The treatment is not painful but may feel like small pricks or stings that pinch and may burn for a few seconds on the skin. The discomfort will subside shortly after treatment.
#4 After Treatment
Immediately after treatment, there may be slight redness and swelling in the treatment area, which will subside after 30 minutes. In some cases, initial skin discoloration, resembling the early stages of bruising, may occur, which is entirely normal and is due to minor tissue bleeding.
After treatment, there is a risk of infection in the treatment area. It is important to avoid touching the treated area and applying deodorant for at least 4 hours. Also, refrain from heavy physical exertion for 1 day or exposing the treatment area to intense heat or pressure for the rest of the day you received the treatment. This prevents the toxin depots from sweating out.
Avoid taking blood-thinning medications, such as fish oil, Treo, Ipren, Kodimagnyl, and similar medications for 1 day after treatment, as this can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding.
#5 Number of Treatments and Expectations
The treatment effect with Botulinum toxin for localized hyperhidrosis occurs within 1-2 weeks. The duration of a treatment for increased sweating is individual and depends on the severity but averages 6-12 months. 5% may experience inadequate treatment effectiveness regardless of the dosage.
#6 Side Effects and Risks
Bruises typically disappear for most individuals after 4-6 days. In rare cases, larger hematomas, which are blood collections under the skin, may occur and usually resolve within 2-4 weeks. During this period, the tissue may be tender, appear reddish/bluish, and there may be increased swelling, as well as palpable irregularities in the tissue.
With treatment using Botulinum A toxin, there is a small risk of infection with either bacteria or viruses. Infection is characterized by redness, tenderness, swelling of the skin, and possible fever. If an infection occurs, it will be experienced as a sudden worsening or regression in the process. The risk of infection is greatest in the first hours after treatment and can easily be treated with antibiotics. If in doubt, please contact the clinic. If it is outside clinic hours, please contact your own doctor or the emergency department.
A few individuals may experience headaches in the first few days. Other side effects are very rare. Severe allergic reactions in the form of anaphylactic shock are extremely rare and require prompt treatment.
#7 Contraindications
The following are reasons why you cannot be approved for the treatment:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Anticoagulant therapy (blood-thinning treatment)
- Known allergy to the solution's ingredients (Botulinum toxin, human albumin, sodium succinate)
- Some rare neuromuscular diseases (e.g., myasthenia)
- Hemophilia (bleeding disorder)
- Active herpes outbreak in the treatment area on the day of treatment
