Read everything you need to know about the treatment here:
#1 In Brief
At Cosmo Laser, spider veins on the legs are treated with microsclerosis. As people age, most individuals develop spider veins on their legs to varying degrees. Spider veins or dilated blood vessels on the legs can be genetically predisposed, and they often appear during and after pregnancy. These veins do not disappear on their own and tend to become more prominent over time.
Microsclerosis is a commonly used method for removing unsightly blue and red spider veins on the legs. The treatment involves injecting a thin, flowing liquid called Aethoxysclerol into the vein using a very fine needle. The liquid is tissue-irritating and causes the veins to contract.
#2 Before Treatment
If you suspect that you have varicose veins, it is a requirement that you have this evaluated by a doctor before your first treatment. In the case of varicose veins, these should be treated first, as there is an increased risk of new spider veins occurring despite optimal treatment.
Avoid taking blood-thinning preparations such as fish oil, Treo, Ipren, Kodimagnyl, and similar medications for a week before the treatment, as this may result in a poorer outcome. The discontinuation of strong blood-thinning agents like heart aspirin should be done in consultation with your own doctor.
The treatment area should be intact, without infections, wounds, or irritation. It is also recommended to ensure that the skin is well-maintained before starting the treatment. Well-maintained skin responds better to the treatment and can recover more quickly.
During your consultation, a specialist, in collaboration with you, will assess and map out the veins you wish to have treated. Failure to adhere to the above precautions may result in the treatment being canceled or postponed. In cases where we assess an increased risk of side effects, we reserve the right to charge a fee of DKK 500 if you are sent home, and the appointment is canceled later than 24 hours before the treatment. This also applies to no-shows or cancellations made later than 24 hours before the treatment. According to cosmetic treatment regulations, the treated area must be photographed before the treatment can begin.
#3 During Treatment
The skin is disinfected. The treatment is performed using a very fine needle, and you may feel small pricks in the skin. We recommend that you do not have a tan when the treatment is performed, as this makes it easier to see the veins.
#4 After Treatment
It is very common to experience mild burning, redness, and tenderness in and around the treated veins. It is normal for the veins to be more noticeable in the days following the treatment, but this usually subsides after a few weeks.
To achieve the best results, it is recommended to wear compression stockings for the first 7 days after the treatment. For some, it is also recommended to sleep with the compression stockings on. The compression stockings should provide a minimum compression of 16-21 mmHg.
#5 Number of Treatments and Expectations
The number of treatments is assessed individually. Typically, 1-3 treatments with 4-6 weeks between sessions are recommended for a good result. We find that in some cases, it may not be possible to close the blood vessels with the treatment. If you do not respond to the treatments, unfortunately, we cannot offer a refund.
#6 Side Effects and Risks
In rare cases, ulceration or skin discoloration may occur. If this happens, it is essential not to pick at the sores, as this can lead to infection and unsightly scars. Skin discoloration usually disappears on its own, but this can take up to 3-24 months. If signs of infection or unexpected reactions occur, it is advisable to immediately contact the clinic and speak with a doctor or nurse.
#7 Contraindications
The following are reasons why you cannot be approved for the treatment:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
- Moderate to severe leg swelling
- Varicose veins in the area to be treated
- Allergy to local anesthesia or Aethoxysclerol (Polidocanol)
- Anticoagulation treatment (blood-thinning medication)
- Untreated diabetes
#8 Consent
According to cosmetic treatment regulations, you can provide consent for treatment once verbal information has been provided.
A companion is always welcome to be present during consultation and treatment. We are always available to assist with any further questions.
